Tuna catch brings back childhood memories
In the 1940s to early 50s the highlights of my school holidays were a day trip to Scarborough in Fawcett’s coach and a trip to Scarborough in a corridor coach pulled by a steam train.
Down to the beach we went.
Deck chairs were hired for the day, bucket and spade unpacked, sandwiches eaten on the beach and a paddle in the sea.
Not forgetting, of course, a Jaconelli’s ice cream on the front.
Funds rarely ran to fish and chips in those days.
Occasionally, we changed trains at Seamer to spend a day at Filey, stopping at Sterchey’s on the way down to the beach to add one of their delicious cakes and a baby Hovis loaf to our picnic bag.
Always on display in a little hut next to the harbour at Scarborough was the latest local catch of a giant ‘Tunny’ fish.
In The Press this week it was good to see the picture of the whopper landed at Whitby recently - fingers crossed that these huge fish will return to our waters once again.
