Traditional country show returns to North York Moors for 117th year

A traditional country show is returning for its 117th year.

The Farndale Show will take place on Bank Holiday Monday, August 31, at Church Houses in Farndale, set in the North York Moors National Park.

First held in 1896, the event is a long-running celebration of rural life and community, promising a full day of entertainment and agricultural displays for visitors of all ages.

Gates open to the public at 9.30am.

A spokesman for the show said: "is a great day out for the whole family.

"With everything you would expect at a traditional Dales country show, this year’s special attractions are Little Nippers dog display, Ridgeside Falconry and Circus OZ.

"there are also traditional skills on show with Jarvis Browning Blacksmith and the Commondale Wool Spinners."

Visitors can enjoy a wide range of exhibits and activities, including agricultural displays featuring cattle, sheep, goats, and vintage sections.

Two large marquees will be filled with homemade baking, arts and crafts, flowers, plants, fruit and vegetables, and stick dressing exhibits.

There will also be a dedicated Fur and Feather tent.

Horse and pony events, a craft marquee, and most of the trade stands will be located across the stream from the main show field.

Food and drink outlets, including artisan street food stalls, will be available throughout the day.

Children can take part in a fancy dress competition, races, tug-of-war, and the popular hobby horse racing competition.

Dog owners can enter their pets into various competitions in the dog ring.

Sheepdog trials will begin at 12.30pm on a field just past the pub, and a clay pigeon shoot will take place at 5pm in a field opposite the main free car park.

The day will conclude with a game of Quoits on the main show field, where locals compete for a coveted trophy.

Nearby St Mary’s Church will feature a flower display and will be open to visitors looking for a quiet spot to cool off.

The Feversham Arms Inn, located close to the show field, will be open all day for food and drink.

The 2027 Farndale Calendar, which raises funds for the village hall, will be launched at the show and available for purchase near the band area.

Entry prices are £8 for adults, £4 for children, with under-fives free.

Parking on the show fields costs £10, but free parking is available nearby, including a newly opened second car park just a short walk from the showground.
