A man who launched a sustained glass-bottle attack on a woman has been detained in hospital.
Ibrahim Albashir, 34, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to attempted murder over the attack near The Original Oak pub on Otley Road, Headingley, Leeds, and was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court on August 25.
He was sentenced to 25 years in prison but will be detained in hospital for as long as necessary before serving any remaining time behind bars.
The attack occurred shortly after 9pm on March 17, 2024.
A member of security staff from the pub called police to report that a man had attacked a woman with a glass bottle at a nearby bus stop.
The 32-year-old victim suffered serious cuts to her neck, chest, head and hands and needed immediate hospital treatment.
Detective Inspector Richard James of Leeds CID said: "Albashir approached a lone woman and subjected her to a ferocious, sustained attack which stopped only when security staff intervened.
"Thankfully they heard the victim’s screams and rushed to her aid, potentially putting themselves in harm's way to protect her."
He praised the pub staff for detaining Albashir and treating the victim’s injuries until paramedics arrived.
Mr James said: "Without their actions, this could very easily have been a murder investigation."
Police arrested Albashir at the scene and took him to hospital for assessment before placing him in custody.
The detective acknowledged the trauma experienced by the victim and the wider public concern following the incident.
He said: "We also understand the wider public concern that an incident such as this can cause. We will not tolerate violence against women and girls, and this investigation has been treated with the utmost seriousness since the outset.
"We gathered the evidence that has resulted in Albashir being charged with and admitting an offence of attempted murder."
The court heard that Albashir has a mental disorder and will be detained in hospital for treatment.
Mr James said he hoped the conviction would give the victim some closure.
He said: "I hope that this helps her find some form of closure on this truly awful chapter of her life."
