A WATER safety event has been cancelled due to the forecast for heavy rain and a Met Office Yellow Weather Warning for thunderstorms and lightning.
The free community event was due to take place on Thursday, August 27, at East Holmes Field in Ilkley, with demonstrations and activities planned for all ages.
It was organised by Bradford Council ward officers to raise awareness of water safety, particularly during the warmer months when more people gather near open water.
Councillor Ian Walker, Bradford Council’s executive member for neighbourhoods and communities, said: "It has been an exceptionally hot and dry summer, and people have been drawn to areas like the riverside at Ilkley to cool off.
"It's important that everyone understands the risks associated with open water."
West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and West Yorkshire Police were set to take part in the event.
Assistant District Commander Chris Burke said: "On warm summer days when people are enjoying themselves it’s easy to be caught off guard and a fun day out can quickly turn to tragedy."
Sergeant Mike Laycock from the Keighley neighbourhood policing team said: "Working together with our partners is key to keeping communities safe."
Organisers have said they will provide an update if the event can be rescheduled.
