AN eye surgeon has warned that regular eye exams are essential for protecting long-term health.
Mohammed Mohyudin, an ophthalmologist at Newmedica clinics in Bradford and Huddersfield, issued the reminder during National Eye Exam Month, stressing that optometrists are the "GPs of the eyes" and play a critical role in detecting sight-threatening conditions early.
Mr Mohyudin said: "There are many eye conditions that, while highly treatable when caught early, can cause rapid deterioration of sight if left untreated, and in some cases even irreversible sight loss.
"Even if your vision seems fine, it’s important to have regular eye exams at your local opticians at least every two years."
He explained that optometrists can spot early signs of glaucoma, cataracts, and other conditions that may not yet cause symptoms.
Newmedica Bradford and Huddersfield, based in Cleckheaton, offers NHS and private treatment for a range of eye conditions, including specialist services like YAG laser treatment and oculoplastic surgery.
Mr Mohyudin also highlighted the link between eye health and general wellbeing.
He said: "It’s not just eye conditions that opticians can detect, our eyes are often an indicator of our overall health and eye exams can help identify other health issues including diabetes and high blood pressure.
"It’s the only place in the body where blood vessels, nerves and tissue can be seen without surgery."
