CHINESE electric vehicles are gaining ground in the UK market.

Chinese EVs now hold a 16.5 per cent share of the UK market, with brands such as BYD, Omoda, Jaecoo, and Xpeng drawing increasing interest from drivers.

The study compared 12 popular Chinese models against Western and East Asian competitors, examining factors like price, lease cost, range, charging speed, safety, and DVSA recall history.

Tom Preston, chief executive officer at Hippo Leasing, said: "Chinese EVs tend to get discussed in extremes, either as unbeatable bargains or risky imports.

"Although the reality is far more complex.

"Most of the Chinese models that we evaluated offer solid build quality, competitive tech, and strong crash safety ratings."

Of the 12 models studied, only two have been subject to DVSA safety recalls, with the remaining 10 maintaining a clean recall record to date.
