A REPORT has revealed why a Bradford butchers was slapped with a food hygiene rating of one.

Adil Halal Butchers Ltd, based on Spencer Road in Great Horton, was inspected by Bradford Council’s environmental health food safety team on June 16. It was given the second-lowest rating.

When we previously reported on this rating, we requested the full food hygiene inspection report from Bradford Council.

Now that we have had sight of this report, we can provide readers with a better understanding of why this business received such a low rating.

It's important to note that other businesses that operate on the site are completely separate to Adil Halal Butchers andthis rating does not reflect their own food hygiene standards of rating.

What did the inspection find?

The inspection for Adil Hala Butchers found repeat failures and raised concerns around cleanliness, maintenance and management.

A report from Bradford Council, dated June 17, stated that many of the issues identified had also been raised at the previous inspection, affecting the confidence-in-management score, and told the business to implement systems to complete actions and prevent repeat problems.

The report highlighted a list of faults, including the absence of hand-washing materials, inadequate pest control, and damaged equipment and infrastructure.

For example, the inspector stated in the report: "Provide hand-washing materials at the butcher-area wash-hand basin [and] at the toilet wash-hand basin.

"Provide hand-drying materials at the toilet wash-hand basin."

Flies in the raw meat area

Inspectors also found flies in the raw meat production area, damage to the left side of the chest-freezer handle, and damaged floor mats.

They also called for a deep clean of the premises, listing specific points that needed urgent attention.

The report said: "Deep-clean and disinfect the following: butcher-area floor (large amount of dirt and debris); walk-in chiller floor; bandsaw; chest freezer; vacuum-packing machine; areas behind equipment, including storage and wash basins; equipment-wash-basin surfaces."

Cobwebs from the ceiling

The council also ordered the removal of redundant items from the butcher area and cobwebs from the ceiling ventilation unit in the raw meat section.

The report further advised: "Review the food-safety management system particularly cleaning and disinfection, maintenance, and vacuum packing.

"Retrain food handlers in those procedures in line with their duties."

Electrician 'needed to make areas safe'

The business was also instructed to improve traceability records, provide a current pest control report, and supply up-to-date staff training documentation.

Electrical hazards were identified in multiple areas, including above the wash-hand basin and behind the chest freezer.

The report read: "A competent electrician was to undertake the work needed to make these areas safe."
