Poundland has confirmed its Darlington North Road branch will close next month.

This comes as the retailer was unable to agree on new lease terms with its landlord.

The discount retailer’s store at North Road Retail Park is due to shut on September 25.

Shoppers are being directed to its nearby High Row town-centre branch, which is a 10-minute drive away or 20-minute walk.

A Poundland spokesperson told The Northern Echo: “I’m afraid our North Road retail park store is set to close on September 25.

“I’m afraid the simple reason is we’ve been unable to secure new lease terms as the landlord may have other plans for the location.

“However, as I’m sure you already know, we have a store close by in the town centre on High Row, so we look forward to welcoming customers there.”

Staff are being consulted about their futures, the retailer said.

Poundland said it is consulting staff at the North Road branch and considering alternative opportunities for affected colleagues.

The spokesperson added: “Whenever we close a store in these kinds of circumstances, we consult with colleagues to look at other opportunities and that work is underway.”

The closure will leave the retail park without one of its discount shopping outlets, although the company’s High Row store remains open in Darlington town centre.

Poundland has not said what will replace the shop in the unit, but the retailer said the landlord may have other plans for the location.
