Preview: Harrogate villagers' scarecrow creations have included classic Beatles album covers and more
The return is to happen soon of one of North Yorkshire’s most famous scarecrow competitions which last year saw a reenactment in straw of the cover of the Beatles’ Abbey Road album.
Located less than ten miles from Harrogate, Minskip has built a reputation across Yorkshire for this annual event which was first launched six years ago.
Taking place on September 5 and 6, the Minskip Scarecrow Competition will see almost the entire village making scarecrows that line the main street in a blaze of colour throughout the weekend.
One of the main organisers, Debbie Hargreaves, said: "The event has grown hugely since its inception six years ago.
“It’s absolutely wonderful how so many villagers have made scarecrows in the past and I expect the same this year.
"The competition has really caught the imagination in recent years of the village and the standard is incredibly high.
"It’s great fun and all proceeds go towards St John’s Church, our little church, which, like so many rural churches, is desperately in need of money.
“I’m sure that this special weekend will mean that Minskip, once again, will be the talking point beyond the village."
The theme of this year’s event will be The Circus and the competition will be judged by BBC Radio York presenter Elly Fiorentini.
There will be home-baked cakes and tea/coffee on offer on both days from noon to 4pm in the church garden.
There will also be ice creams, Pimms and a barbecue on the Sunday from noon to 4pm.
Other stalls on Sunday will include a tombola, plants and a pre-loved stall.
Car parking for visitors will be available in the village field.
Debbie Hargreaves said: “Apart from raising money for the church, the Scarecrow Competition is a brilliant way of creating and enhancing community spirit within Minskip.
"We pride ourselves on being a friendly and welcoming village and this weekend is a great example.”
The suggested entry fee is £10 and prizes and donations have been made by a number of Minskip businesses including Minskip Garage, Yolk Farm Shop and Minskip Garage, together with Morrisons.
