Search the Public Notice Portal A NEW stretch of a major North Yorkshire road has opened to traffic following the largest highways project ever undertaken by the county council.
The main section of the new A59 Kex Gill route, a route which is considered one of the most strategically important in the country, has opened today (August 25).
The majority of the 4.2-kilometre route at Kex Gill, which has replaced a section of road repeatedly affected by landslips, and provides a key link between Harrogate and Skipton.

Councillor Malcolm Taylor, North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for highways and transportation, said: "This is a moment that we have been aiming for throughout such a complex and detailed highways project.
"It will bring major benefits for communities in the county as well as across the North of England as it is such an important route."

The project was launched to address the long-standing issue of landslips in the area.
Since 2000, the old section of the A59 has experienced 15 landslips, costing more than £6 million in repairs and causing repeated closures.
Most construction work is now complete, with only the tie-ins to the existing road network as well as landscaping works still to be finished - with over 12,700 trees planted nearby.

Two of the three lanes of the new section of the A59, which includes a crawler lane for slow-moving traffic, will be available for motorists to use until all elements of the scheme are finished.
A 30mph speed restriction will be in place while the remaining works are completed.
