Heatwaves show protecting greenbelt land is an imperative - Yorkshire Post Letters

Regarding the recent heatwave and the negative effect this has had on crop yields. It is imperative that urgent action is taken to prevent any and all development on greenbelt sites which would build over farmland currently used for food production.

Urgent action is also needed to educate people about climate change and to enable them to live cleaner, greener lifestyles.

The Sheffield Local plan has proposed building on a large tract of greenbelt land in the Ecclesfield, Chapeltown and Grenoside areas of the city. Much to the bemusement of the Save Ecclesfield, Grenoside as Chapeltown Greenbelt campaign and local residents the Green Party have voted in favour of these plans.

All the voters who voted Green in the local elections in Sheffield must be wondering why they voted Green in the first place, with most of them doing so to prevent damage to the environment as is proposed in the local plan proposals to build on the greenbelt in these areas.

In terms of educating people on climate change a council staffed library service previously existed in the areas affected by the proposed greenbelt development at High Green, Chapeltown, Ecclesfield and Grenoside.

Of these only Chapeltown still has a branch library, limiting access to education about climate change. Sheffield Green Party have no plans or proposals to change this. What is the point in voting Green?
