First look: Inside York’s new shop filled with tasty treats

Meats and cheeses always pleases – as a new cheese and charcuterie shop has opened in York.

The Big Cheese has opened at 4 Skeldergate this week, and is a haven of cheese, cured meats, and spices – while promoting sustainability and Yorkshire producers.

The location was previously home to Mexican restaurant Mexicano, which has since moved to Blake Street.

The packed cheese fridge inside the shop stocks a wide-range of cheese, including Yorkshire brands such as the West Yorkshire Cryer & Stott Cheesemongers and the Thirsk-based Shepherds Purse Cheeses.

There’s also handcrafted British charcuterie from Northallerton company Mount Grace Charcuterie, with products including spreadable Nduja, Wagyu beef and horseradish salami, and coffee and chilli beef Bresaola.

And there’s pickles, jams and chutneys from Ripon-based Rosebud Preserves and York-based Bessie’s Yorkshire Preserves.

In the shop there are jars of spices, herbs and seasonings that can be measured out for purchase in aim of promoting an eco-sustainable approach.

For now, The Big Cheese is operating solely as a shop, but coming soon will be an eat-in option too.

Since the space is small, there will be just a few tables set up inside, with charcuterie and deli boards on the menu.
