Visitors will be able to travel through wormholes, explore the mysteries of time and watch Durham Cathedral transformed by light and sound when Luxmuralis returns this autumn.
The international acclaimed artistic collaboration brings its new installation ‘Time’ to the cathedral from Wednesday, October 7 to Sunday, October 11, offering an immersive experience inspired by history, science, imagination and H.G Well’s ‘The Time Machine’.
Lasting about 45 minutes, the experience begins as visitors enter the cathedral in darkness through the North Door before embarking on a journey through the historic building, accompanied by vibrant projections and an immersive soundscape.

The experience starts in the north nave aisle and passes through the quire, where visitors can pause to take in projections cast onto the high altar.
The route then continues into the central nave, where soaring columns and the cathedral’s vast interior will be transformed by light.
With the pew removed from the nave, visitors will have space to sit, pause, and reflect while surrounded by large-scale projections and sound.
The journey continues through the cloisters, where the Chapter House will be illuminated, before concluding at the Galilee Chapel.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to light a candle before leaving the installation.
According to organisers, the installation will take audiences on a dramatic journey through different eras, allowing them to encounter humanity across time while exploring the intricate workings of clocks and concept of time itself.

The event marks the fifth consecutive year Luxmuralis has brought one of its large-scale installations to Durham Cathedral, following previous shows including: Life, Science, Space and Storytellers.
Entry is by timed ticket only and advanced booking is essential.

Adult tickets cost £11, children’s tickets for those aged three to 17 are £4.50, while children under three and carers can attend free of charge.
Visitors are encouraged to arrive at their allocated time slot, with entry permitted up to 15 minutes after the booked time.
