‘We will all miss him dearly.’
The words of York City this afternoon after the death of former player Quevin Castro at the age of 25.
He collapsed on the pitch while playing for Portuguese side Real Sport Clube earlier today.
A doctor with the team he was playing against, Estrela da Amadora, tried to revive him with a defibrillator to no avail.
He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at hospital.
The midfielder played for York City during the 2023-24 season.
He featured 16 times across all competitions, scoring against Boreham Wood in September 2023.
In a statement today, the club said: “Everyone at York City Football Club is devastated to learn of the passing of former player Quevin Castro.
“Quevin was a much-loved member of our 23/24 team. We will all miss him dearly.
“We send all our love to Quevin’s friends and family at this very difficult time.”
Born in Portugal, Quevin moved to England and grew up in Norfolk.
He played for West Brom, Burton Albion and Notts County before joining City. He left York in May 2024.
