A catering business at a former textile mill in Bradford has been handed a one-star food hygiene rating following an inspection.

Gulhar Catering, based at Cannon Mills on Union Road in Great Horton, was inspected on June 9 and found to have several food safety failings, including inadequate cooling of high-risk foods and poor handwashing practices.

Cannon Mills is a Grade II listed former textile mill in Great Horton which today operates as a popular Sunday market and shopping village.

Concerns around 'high risk foods'

The official food hygiene report stated: "It was found that high risk foods that were prepared and transported... had not been adequately cooled to chilled... or held hot."

Food health officials advised: "Raw materials, ingredients, intermediate products and finished products likely to support the reproduction of pathogenic micro-organisms... not to be kept at measures that might result in a risk to health."

Inspectors also noted that food was being stored in a faulty fridge, and advised that foods should be covered appropriately.

They said staff should also wear aprons.

The inspection also highlighted that "the condition of cleaning throughout the food business was not acceptable."

Pest-proofing was also advised for the front roller shutter due to gaps in the corrugated roof panel.

Other issues included the use of dry disinfectant wipes, a lack of hand sanitiser, and open hand towels being stored above open food, creating a risk of contamination.

Gulhar claims the rating is under review

When the T&A approached the owners of Gulhar Catering, a spokesperson claimed that "the case is currently under review."

However, Bradford Council said this was not the case.

A council spokesperson said: "I can confirm that there has been no request to undertake a rerate for Gulhar Catering at the Cannon Mills address."

When the T&A spoke to the owner, they advised us that they were undertaking work to improve the site and hoped to receive a reassessment imminently.

It is not clear if or when this re-evaluation will take place.
