A BRADFORD man with a history of domestic violence has been jailed for two assaults on separate women.
Daniel Callaway’s behaviour was said to be driven by his drinking.
Prosecutor Nicola Hoskins told Bradford Crown Court how 42-year-old Callaway’s first victim was found unresponsive following an argument between the pair, who had both been drinking.
Woman was unresponsive
During the row, on the afternoon of November 24, 2024, the victim locked herself in a toilet, but Callaway dragged her out and into the living room by her forearm, which he twisted.
He was swearing and shouting and appeared to smash a bottle against a wall, which broke, and onto which he pushed the woman.
She collapsed and appeared unresponsive.
En-route to hospital she was given oxygen but remembered little of what happened until she woke up.
Callaway was arrested and gave “no comment” answers in an interview with police.
Man slapped another woman
On July 3, 2025, Callaway was in a relationship with another woman.
During an argument over his mental health issues and blackouts Callaway “lashed out” and slapped her several times to the face whilst wearing a ring.
She fell to the floor with lacerations and bleeding to her face, caused by the ring, and ran to a neighbour.
An ambulance and the police were called.
Callaway was again arrested and admitted assaulting the victim but said it was because they had been drinking and he blacked out.
Domestic abuser requires 'sustained intervention'
The court heard that Callaway, of Leeds Road, Bradford, had six previous convictions for ten offences including for violence, battery, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Mitigating, Ella Embleton-Brown said Callaway, who appeared via video link from HMP Leeds, had successfully detoxed from alcohol since being in prison and was now abstinent.
She told the court: “It is evident that there is a recurring pattern for Mr Callaway when he is faced with stresses within a relationship, separation, or perceived rejection, which triggers an emotional instability increasing his alcohol consumption and his abusive behaviour.”
She said he required “sustained intervention” to address his entrenched alcohol misuse and domestic abuse and that a prison setting would not provide that support.
What the judge said
Sentencing Callaway to 30 months in jail, Ms Recorder Ruwena Khan accepted that he was detoxing from his “significant dependency” on alcohol but added: “A lot of blame on your past behaviour is placed on alcohol, stating that you had alcohol-induced memory loss.
“And whilst you displayed some remorse for both of the offences your focus was really on yourself rather than the victims.
“You seem to take a greater ownership of your actions in the second offence but ultimately what I find quite concerning is that domestic violence is a matter which stretches across several intimate relationships that you have had.
“A probation officer quite rightly notes that there is potentially a risk of further offending in a domestic context in the future, and that’s quite a high risk.”
