THE 1970s proved to be ‘the name of the game’ as school children performed a medley of ABBA hits to mark the 50th anniversary of a much-loved caravan site.
St Helen's Caravan Park in Wykeham, between Scarborough and Pickering, opened its doors to the public in 1976, the same year ABBA was topping the charts.
As part of the site’s 1970s-themed celebrations, children from nearby Wykeham Primary School performed and took part in a postcard competition.
Pupils spent the morning at the site drawing and painting scenes from around the leisure complex. St Helen's had them all made into postcards and guests voted for a winner.
Year 6 pupil Georgia took the honours and her postcard is now being sold in the campsite shop over the summer with the funds going to Macmillan Nurses, a cause that is important to both the school and St Helen’s.
Executive headteacher Rowena Thorp said: “St Helen's is special to Wykeham School. It is where we have Forest Schools and we also use it for sports events and other curriculum areas such as DT and science.
“Before it became a campsite, the site itself used to be a limestone quarry and in the olden days children used to finish at school and walk up there to work in the quarry. So it was great to be part of the latest milestone of its history.”
