A drug addict banned from contacting his own mother for repeatedly pestering her for money has been jailed after turning up at her home and harassing her.
Bradford Crown Court heard how Christopher Bloomfield went straight to his disabled mother’s home on being released from prison for breaching a restraining order prohibiting him from seeing her.
Bloomfield, 48, was crying and claiming he had nowhere to stay.
When he told her he loved her, his mother opened the door but said her son “appeared to be under the influence of something by the way he was talking, and this scared me.”
Bloomfield soon began behaving aggressively, which prompted a neighbour to call the police.
When they arrived, Bloomfield threw a mitre saw at one of them, which resulted in him being sprayed with Pava incapacitant.
Afterwards, he kicked one officer and tried to bite another.
In a victim statement read to the court on her behalf, Bloomfield’s mother, of Sowerby Bridge, Clderdale, said: “Even though he is my son I can’t cope with this anymore. I am absolutely fed-up.”
She said her son had been to prison a number of times for breaching the restraining order.
She said: “Every time he comes out of prison, he seems to have gotten worse. Nearly every time he has been released from prison he comes straight around or gets back into contact with me.
“He seems to think that this order does not apply to him.”
She said her son made her nervous, she wanted no further contact with him, and that the restraining order should remain in place.
The court heard that Bloomfield, of no fixed abode, had 54 previous convictions for 90 offences, including 26 breaches of the restraining order.
He appeared in court via video link from HMP Leeds after being recalled to prison to serve the remainder of a 48-week sentence imposed last year.
Mitigating, Ella Embleton-Brown said Bloomfield was in the throes of a Class A drug addiction and would repeatedly ask his parents for money to fund that addiction.
He had used drugs since the age of nine and, after suffering abuse during childhood, had been diagnosed with PTSD and a personality disorder.
She said the most recent breach had arisen from his confusion over where he would stay after being released from prison.
An only child, he turned to his mother as his only relative.
She said he was extremely sorry for the distress that he had caused to his mother.
Mrs Recorder Geraldine Kelly KC sentenced Bloomfield to 20 months’ imprisonment for the breach, plus three months for assaulting the police.
She told him: “You have caused your mother serious distress to the point that she has said that she wants no more to do with you.
“That’s about as extreme as it gets.”
She said Bloomfield would serve up to 40 per cent of his sentence before being eligible for automatic release.
The restraining order remains in place.
