TREE roots are being blamed for blocked drains.
Ben Binns, regional director of Drain Doctor Bradford, has issued a reminder to homeowners that tree roots can cause serious underground drainage issues, particularly during the summer months when trees are in full growth and searching for water.
Mr Binns said: "They are constantly looking for a source of water.
"If there are any minor defects in the underground drainage system – a gap in a coupling, a crack, or an open joint – these all allow water to escape.
"The roots will naturally grow towards the water source and seek it out."
Certain types of trees are more problematic than others.
Mr Binns said: "Laurel or evergreens, these tend to be quite bad in our experience."
Once inside a pipe, roots can cause blockages or even lead to broken and collapsed drains.
Mr Binns added: "It could be months or years in our experience as to how long roots take to cause blockages, or worse still, broken and collapsed drains."
He explained that older homes with clay pipes are more vulnerable, while modern PVC pipes are less prone to root intrusion.
Homeowners are advised to stay alert for early warning signs such as slow-draining sinks and toilets.
