A fire has forced the temporary closure of one of the North East’s most popular fish and chip shops.
Lewis’s in Seahouses, Northumberland confirmed the closure on Thursday (August 19) following a blaze that broke out at its Main Street premises earlier in the week.
The team at Lewis’s said: "We are devastated to share the news that we had a fire on our premises after closing on Tuesday evening.
"Thankfully there was only a few of us left on the premises and we all got out unharmed.
"Unfortunately the damage means we’ll be closed until further notice.
"We are completely gutted and still trying to process what has happened to a place that means so much to us, our team and our customers."
The chippy has long been a favourite among locals and visitors alike and has earned national praise as one of the UK’s top chippies.
It has also earned a spot on The Times’ list of the best fish and chip shops in the UK in both 2022 and 2023, and attracted a host of celebrity fans over the years.
In March, North Shields musician Sam Fender visited Lewis's with his family, just days after winning Song of the Year and Rock Act at the 2026 Brit Awards.
Other well-known customers have included the late football legend Jack Charlton, actor Kevin Whately, and Great North Run founder Sir Brendan Foster.
The Lewis’s team have thanked those who helped during the incident.
The team said: "We would also like to make a huge thank you and express our gratitude to the few individuals who helped keep the fire contained and eventually went out while we waited on the emergency services."
The award-winning business ended its statement with a message of reassurance.

No injuries were reported in the incident.
The team has promised to keep customers updated on when they will reopen.
