The County Council of Durham announced the temporary closure of Footpath No.5 in Shincliffe Parish.
The affected footpath stretches for 86 metres from its junction with Shincliffe Lane, moving north to the junctions of footpath No.90 Shincliffe Parish.
This closure is to facilitate essential repair and renewal work on the Whitwell Bank Footbridge.
Pedestrian traffic is prohibited from using this section of the footpath during the repair period.
However, a diversion will be available for those wishing to access the area.
The alternative route is from the south side of the closure on Shincliffe Lane, heading west to the junction of public footpath No.6 Shincliffe Parish.
From there, pedestrians can continue north on public footpath No.89 Shincliffe Parish until reaching the junction of public footpath No.90.

The route then heads eastwards until reaching the junction of footpath No.90 Shincliffe Parish, allowing access to other areas.
The expected duration of the closure order is six months, although the council has stated that the maximum duration is six months.
The works initially commenced under a 21-day Temporary Traffic Regulation Notice on July 16, 2026.
However, the council has now extended this period from August 6, for approximately six months due to the extent of the necessary repairs.
The council has also warned that on occasions, alternative dates for the closure may be necessary.
