Harrogate College students celebrate GCSE success while juggling work and family

From working at Harrogate Hospital to caring for a young family, students at Harrogate College have been celebrating GCSE English and maths results after fitting their studies around work, family and other commitments.

Among those are adults returning to education and young people re-taking English and maths alongside their course.

Originally from South Africa, the 55-year-old discovered that his previous English qualifications were not equivalent to a GCSE and enrolled at the college to gain the qualification he needed to progress towards his long-term goal of becoming a nurse.

“The face-to-face learning experience, engaging lessons and tailored support from my tutor made a huge difference, helping me build the knowledge and confidence needed to succeed,” said Neil

Alongside his studies, Neil was recognised with the NHS England Chief Nursing Award for his outstanding contribution to supporting colleagues.

Meanwhile, returning to education was a big step for Basma Elshobaky, who received a grade 6 and a grade 8 in her GCSE English and maths, respectively, while looking after a young family.

The 39-year-old plans to continue her studies with the ambition of becoming a maths teacher.

“The support and encouragement from my tutors and the wider college staff played a huge part in helping me succeed, while meeting new people and making friends made my experience even more rewarding,” said Basma.

Basma is excited about the future and is determined to achieve her goal of inspiring others through teaching.
