A flat has hit the market in one of York’s most divisive buildings.

The two-bedroom property is for sale in Stonebow House, the former Stonebow office block built in 1964.

After Stonebow House opened, the Guardian labelled it as “hideous” and in 1965 Ian Nairn in the Observer referred to the building as “sheer visual misery to the passer-by”.

It was made in the post-war brutalist architectural style which has often been likened to marmite: people either love it or hate it.

The building has since had a modern refit, repurposing it for 21st century life.

And now buyers are being given the chance to own part of it – for £550,000.

The two-bedroom flat is on the four-floor of Stonebow House and offers views across York from its private balcony.

Carter Jonas, which is marketing the property, said it has been “beautifully finished” and cantered around an “impressive” open-plan living dining kitchen.

The flat also two double bedrooms, both of which come with en-suite facilities, along with a guest toilet.

A Carter Jonas spokesperson said it is a “standout city apartment, ideal as a main residence, premium pied-à-terre or lock-up-and-leave home”.

The flat is a leasehold property with 250 years left on the lease.

It comes with an annual £250 ground rent, a yearly service charge of £4,049, and building and contents insurance from last April to next month was £709, according to the listing.
