One of the most expensive homes to come onto the York market in recent years has sold.
Grade I listed Garforth House, at 54 Micklegate, was on the market at £3.5 million. It is now listed as sold.
Built for William Garforth and his nephew, Edmund, in 1755-57, it is believed to have been designed by the renowned architect John Carr of York.
It comes with seven bedrooms in the main house, and another two in a separate apartment on the ground floor.
Garforth House was marketed by Prime Residential, who described it as a “stunning private home providing around 15,000 square feet of accommodation with potential as boutique hotel/spa etc if required”.
It includes “some of the finest Georgian features, including a superb cantilever staircase with a stunning Venetian window, original fireplaces, bespoke panelling, and some of the most impressive decorative plasterwork in the city”.
St Margaret’s Independent Grammar School for Girls, run by nuns, moved into the building in 1912 and remained there until in 1968.
Garforth House was then turned into offices, until it was sold in 2011 when it had a guide price of £1.25 million. The new buyers, geological surveyors Lindsay and John Jacques, turned it back into a family home.
In 2020, the property starred as apartments in a gangster movie filmed in the city.
