North East homeowners are being offered a new way to explore solar energy as Mayor Kim McGuinness launches a scheme aimed at helping residents take greater control of their energy bills.
The scheme, delivered by the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority in partnership with Switch Together, uses a group-buying model to secure competitive offers from vetted installers for solar panels and battery storage.
mS McGuinness said: "We must do what we can to help people cut their energy bills.
"This will give homeowners practical ways to reduce their bills and make their homes more energy efficient.
"As we work to build a greener, fairer North East, we want to improve lives for everyone in our region by helping local people take advantage of technologies that can cut carbon emissions while putting more money back into their pockets."
The scheme offers residents the chance to explore whether solar panels and battery storage are suitable for their property, with no obligation to proceed.
Solar panels generate renewable electricity throughout the year, while battery storage allows households to store excess power for later use, reducing reliance on the grid and potentially lowering costs.
George Frost from Switch Together said: "We are here for the people who think they might want to install solar panels but are deterred by the perceived complexity.
"Joining the group is an easy way to help households make an informed decision on an installation and so far we have helped almost 50,000 households install with solar to generate their own electricity."
Participants who register will receive personalised information and guidance, enabling them to make informed decisions about installation.
The scheme supports the North East’s broader goals of improving home energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions, and building more sustainable communities.
It arrives at a time when energy costs remain a concern for many households.
