Pleasure Island: Lidl, holiday lodges and hotels planned for former theme park site

The redevelopment of the former Pleasure Island theme park site in Cleethorpes will be back before councillors to decide on it “ideally as soon as possible”, a councillor has said – but only once due diligence checks have been completed.

The theme park closed in 2016.

At the end of 2022, a planning application was put forward by a consortium of four companies, including Lidl, for the site’s redevelopment.

This would see not only a Lidl supermarket, but also two five-storey hotels, 272 pitches for holiday lodges, use of an existing lake for fishing, and other retail and leisure units.

One of the hotels would also include a casino and a conference centre.

North East Lincolnshire Council’s planning committee was due to decide on it at its July meeting.

A decision was deferred after two late legal representations, one on behalf of Tesco and the other an individual.

It was deferred with the expectation that the application would come before councillors at the planning committee’s August meeting.

Council legal checks after the representations and challenge to the Secretary of State over one element of the planning application are why the proposal remains pending a decision.
