Teams are “working around the clock” to fix a collapsed sewer in Stockton.
Northumbrian Water said a “complex repair” is required after a sewer caved in on the A139 Norton Road, near the junction with Newlands Road, on Monday (August 17).
An emergency road closure is currently in place, with the water firm saying teams will be working across the next few days to ensure the road reopens “as soon as possible”.
Stockton Borough Council initially shut the southbound side of the road at 5pm yesterday but announced that both ways were shut at 9.30pm.

Despite the collapse, there has been no sewer flooding to the streets or to homes.
A spokesperson for Northumbrian Water said: “Last night (Monday) our teams responded following a collapsed sewer on Norton Road in Stockton.
“Our teams attended quickly to investigate the damage and have started working on repairs.
“Due to the location of the collapsed sewer, which is near the junction of Newlands Avenue, we have put a road closure in place on Norton Road in order to allow repairs to be carried out safely and to keep pedestrians and road users safe.
"Access to Newlands Avenue is still available via Cleveland Avenue, and diversions are in place.

“During investigations our teams have confirmed that there has been no sewer flooding to the streets or to customers properties, and we are working closely with residents and the local authorities to carry out repairs as quickly as possible.
“We believe that this will be a complex repair, and our teams will be working around the clock for the next few days to allow the road to be reopened as soon as possible.
“We would like to thank residents for their patience and understanding, and we will continue to provide updates.”

The council said: "An emergency road closure is currently in place on the A139 Norton Road southbound at Norton Avenue due to a sewer collapse.
“Northumbrian Water are leading on the works and traffic management.
“Diversions are in place. Keep checking our social media channels for further updates. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
