Sir Michael Caine is lending his iconic voice to a study exploring the dangers of AI deepfakes.
The research, led by the University of York and the University of Southampton, aims to investigate how effectively people can tell the difference between real human speech and AI-generated voices.
Dr Ben Gibb-Reid, from the University of York's Department of Language and Linguistic Science, said: "We are becoming increasingly familiar with the signs of AI-generated images, but the human ear is not yet as well trained at identifying synthetic audio.
"We will explore a range of linguistic features that may act as 'tells' of authenticity, and contribute to the growing need for effective voice-rights protection.
"We look forward to working with such an iconic voice on this timely and novel project."
As part of the research, participants will be asked to listen to samples of Michael's AI voice replica, created and officially licensed by ElevenLabs, and compare them with genuine recordings of his voice.
Speaking about this, he said: "If my voice can help researchers better understand how people perceive AI-generated speech, protect artists' and actors' rights, and help protect the public from harmful deepfakes, then I'm pleased to support this important research."
The project is funded by the YorVoice project at the University of York and aims to improve understanding of how people perceive synthetic speech, with the long-term goal of developing better tools for identifying AI-generated audio.
Sir Michael Caine, 93, a long-standing advocate of ethical AI, was one of the first major actors to publicly support licensed AI voice technology while calling for stronger protections for performers’ intellectual property and publicity rights.
He is known for actively policing unauthorised uses of his name, image and likeness.
Researchers hope the project will support the development of more effective tools for fighting misinformation and promoting responsible AI use.
The findings are expected to inform future technology, policy and industry standards around media.
ElevenLabs, the company behind the AI voice technology used in the study, works with actors and artists to create licensed voices for creative projects.
It also helps restore the voices of people who have lost them due to illness or injury.
