Flamborough: RNLI crews rescue dog after cliff fall and kayakers as warning issued

Flamborough RNLI volunteer crews have warned dog owners to keep their pets on leads after a dramatic rescue last weekend.

The volunteer crews onboard Forever Yibba (B-959) responded to a dog that had fallen over the cliffs, a boat requiring a tow, four paddle boarders in difficulty, a kayaker who had entered the water and was unable to get back onto his kayak and three paddle boarders who had safely reached shore but were struggling with the conditions over the course of 48 hours.

The weekend was “a reminder of how quickly situations can develop at sea and around the coast”, crews said.

Flamborough RNLI said crews “would like to remind anyone heading out on the water to wear a suitable lifejacket or buoyancy aid, carry a reliable means of calling for help and check the conditions before setting off”.

“Dog owners are also advised to keep dogs on leads when walking close to cliff edges and stay well back from the edge”, the statement continued.

"Dogs can become distracted or suddenly move towards the cliff edge, putting themselves and those attempting to help them at risk.

“If anyone finds themselves in difficulty at sea or around the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

“The dedication and commitment of Flamborough RNLI’s volunteer lifeboat and shore crews ensures the station remains ready to respond to those in need at sea and around the coast, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.”
