Family pay tribute to murdered Sheffield man found dead in Barnsley who has a ‘heart of gold’

The family of a man who was found dead in Barnsley after being reported missing from Sheffield, have remembered a devoted family man with a "heart of gold".

At 5:45pm on Friday (Aug 14), police responded to reports of a missing man from Sheffield.

Later that day, at 10:16pm, police were called to reports of a body of a man inside a property on George Street, in the Worsborough Bridge area of Barnsley.

Emergency services attended, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have now confirmed the identity of the man as 62-year-old Stephen Grimmer.

Stephen’s family have paid tribute to the “loving” man who was “liked by everyone”.

In the tribute, via South Yorkshire Police, the family said: “Stephen was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother who made us all who we are today.

“He would go out of his way to help anyone and was liked by everyone who knew him.

“He lived for holidays with his family and had planned on travelling to Spain the evening that he was tragically killed. His second home was Gibraltar and held some of his best memories.

“Stephen was proud of his army service in the Duke of Wellington regiment and the friends he made in the service were brothers to him.

“He loved his body art, as his face tattoos prove, and although he could often look quite intimidating, he was really as soft as a brush and had a heart of gold.

“We are now asking for privacy as we try to come to terms with the loss of Stephen, who was taken from us far too soon.”

62-year-old Andrew Fowler, Barnsley, was been charged with Stephen’s murder and is due to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on Tuesday (Aug 18).
