Seven fire engines rushed to a blaze the size of ten football pitches over the weekend.
The fire, which broke out near Chester Road in the Penshaw area of Sunderland, has left behind a significant trail of destruction.
It comes just days after the government's emergency alert, warning the public of a high risk of wildfires as temperatures warmed up across the North East.
The blaze prompted a major response from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS).
A spokesman said: "We can confirm that, on the afternoon of Sunday, 16 August, seven fire appliances attended an incident on Wearside."

Crews from Farringdon, Marley Park, Sunderland, Birtley, Gateshead and Tynemouth Community Fire Stations were dispatched.
Pictures show the extent and size of the blaze, as it tore through the fields.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze using six hose reels and handheld fire beaters.

TWFRS added: "The fire covered an area equivalent to around ten football pitches at the height of the incident.
"Crews left the scene at 5.36pm after tackling the fire for more than three and a half hours."
Northumbria Police also attended the scene to assist fire crews.
The cause of the fire has yet to be confirmed.
