Search the Public Notice Portal New pictures have revealed the progress at Darlington’s Treasury hub dubbed ‘Number 11 North’ as around 800 tonnes of steel are installed.
Rapid progress is being made on the Government’s new five-storey Brunswick Street office on the former car park next to the Darlington East End Club.
Once open, it will become the permanent home of the Darlington Economic Campus (DEC) and house more than 1,600 civil servants from across a range of Government departments.
Approximately 800 tonnes of steel are now being installed at the site, with the steel structure forming the frame of the building. Installation is set to be completed in October.
The update comes two weeks after Chancellor John Healey branded Darlington’s Treasury hub ‘No 11 North’ - saying big Government decisions will be made here “day in day out”.

The former defence secretary spoke exclusively to The Northern Echo on his first visit to the site on July 30, saying he could see his bid to “make growth in every postcode” was already “well underway” in the town.
The new DEC hub is expected to be open during the first quarter of 2028 and will accommodate six government departments.
No 11 North
When Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced the transfer power to a new Number 10 North in Manchester, it sparked fears over what that meant for the Government hub in Darlington.

But the Chancellor quickly threw his backing behind the town, saying it would work alongside the Manchester hub to “give people more control of their lives”.
It came after the highly-criticised track record of visits from Mr Healey’s predecessor Rachel Reeves, who the Echo previously revealed spent just two days at the site in 2025.

The DEC, which was launched by the Conservative Party in 2021, is currently based at Feethams House and Bishopsgate House.
The Labour Government then continued the project after its landslide victory over the Conservatives in 2024.
The campus is currently home to about 1,925 civil service roles across ten major government departments, including the Treasury, the Office for National Statistics, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, and others.

There are now around 350 Treasury staff based at DEC, which is almost 20 per cent of the department's overall staff.
Simon Hulme, director of capital projects at the Government Property Agency, said the steel being installed was a "significant milestone".
He said: "We will now continue to work alongside our strategic partners and suppliers as we deliver this modern and digitally-enabled office building that will support the work of more than 1,600 civil servants.”

Darlington MP Lola McEvoy said it was great to see the steel going in: “Darlington is the Number 11 of the North and the new Government Hub on Brunswick Street will be a big boost for the town.
