Search the Public Notice Portal THE transformation of a York store has been given the go ahead following uncertainty over its future.
An application to convert Size?, in St Sampson’s Square, into a Joe & The Juice drinks and sandwich outlet have been approved by City of York Council planning officers.
Officials stated Joe & The Juice was an internationally-recognised brand and the building had already operated as a retail space for a significant period of time.
But Size? owners JD Group declined to comment on the store’s future when previously approached by the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS).
The Danish food and drink seller behind the plans did not respond to requests from LDRS to comment on their application.
It comes after an application for a certificate of lawfulness to allow the conversion to go ahead was lodged in June.

Joe & The Juice’s plans applied to convert the building the venue which would be able to seat 65 people, 29 on the ground floor and 36 on the first.
It would serve drinks including juices, shakes and coffees along with sandwiches, according to a council report on the plans.
Applicants stated the conversion would result in a cleaner, more refined interior while preserving the building’s historic character.
Plans stated: “By virtue of the proposed development, the external enhancements will facilitate the upgrade of the site for the operation of Joe & The Juice.
“Allowing Joe & The Juice to operate in the space will bring increased employment and opportunities for local people and continued social and economic regeneration of the city.”

Council planning officers stated the proposed development fell within the same use class as Size?, meaning the conversion only required a certificate a lawfulness rather than full planning permission.
Officers stated: “Joe & The Juice are an internationally recognised brand that operates in the UK.
“The store sells freshly made juices and shakes and they also sell
coffee and food and snacks.
“There is no primary cooking on-site, some areas of the store also include seating for customers however, there is no table service offered.”
Joe & The Juice was founded in Copenhagen in 2002 and now has more 500 stores across Europe, the United States, Middle East, Africa and Asia.
It is known for its freshly-prepared juices, shakes, coffee and sandwiches, according to its website.
The company has a number of outlets in London and South East England, along with ones in Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Liverpool, Manchester and Oxford.
Clothing brand Size? opened in St Sampson’s Square after plans for it to take over the building were approved in 2018.
There is no reference to changes to Size? in JD Group’s reports on its performance in 2025/6 and its latest business plans.
Its results for 2025/6 lists Size? as one of its brands but does not elaborate further.
