“You’d never know”: York path reopens after police investigation

Cordons barring walkers and cyclists from using a popular path in York during a police investigation have been lifted.

Police tape, blocking passers-by from getting onto part of the orbital cycle path that passes under Wigginton Road bridge, has been removed.

The tape had been put up on different approaches to the footpath and cycle route on Saturday, August 15, as reported by The Press.

One runner who went past the scene today, Sunday, August 16, told The Press: "You'd never know anything had happened there. I don't know anything about the circumstances but there was a lot of police activity here yesterday.

"I hope it wasn't anything serious; it's not something you expect, or want, to see - but obviously there was some kind of incident to warrant the police presence."

A police operation was underway on the cycle path that passes beneath Wigginton Road, near the junction with Crichton Avenue, on Saturday afternoon, August 15.

The focus of police activity seemed to be on the Foss Islands Path by the Wigginton Road bridge near the junction of Crichton Avenue.

Officers were on seen guarding the cordoned-off area including a police vehicle parked up at the junction with Dennings Mews, a small residential cul de sac.

A gate leading onto this section of the orbital cyclepath was also sealed off during the police operation on Saturday afternoon, August 15.

The Press asked officers at the scene for information but they were unable to comment. We have also approached North Yorkshire Police and will share any update when we receive it.

The cycle path leads to New Earswick, Haxby, Heworth, Tang Hall and Osbaldwick.

Following the police cordon being put up, a spokesperson for York Cycle Campaign Group said: "This is a prominent cycle route used by many people to get safely through this area avoiding busy roads. Hopefully nobody was hurt in this incident and the route will be reopened as soon as possible, but obviously we need to let police do what they need for their investigations, so please respect police cordons in the area."
