Campaigners are calling on the council to act after claiming drivers are “ignoring” a no entry sign in a residential York street due to “inadequate signage”.
York Green Party said drivers heading north on Haxby Road are unable to see a no entry sign for Vyner Street as the sign is blocked by a sign for Haxby Road Primary Academy.
Local resident and Green Party Campaigner, Anne Parker, said it means drivers are turning into Vyner Street against the flow of the one-way system, which she deemed “an accident waiting to happen”.
York Green Party said it is urging City of York Council to alter the signs, which are currently around the same height.
City of York Council said road safety is a “top priority” and it will visit the junction to check signs and road markings “to establish whether they need refreshing”.
The Greens said the party has written to residents in Vyner Street, “advising them that the party is demanding action from the Labour council to make the road safer as road users are ignoring no entry rules due to inadequate signage”.

Guildhall Hall’s Green team has asked that the position of the signs are altered so both signs can be seen, the party spokesperson said.
They said the party has also told the council the “no entry” wording is faded.
The Greens said the council has “responded that there is adequate signage”.
Ms Parker called on the council to act as she felt the signs could result in an accident.
“Vehicles are turning into Vyner Street from Haxby Road against the flow of the one-way system, residents will not be anticipating this and it is an accident waiting to happen be that a pedestrian, cyclist or motorist,” she said.
A City of York Council spokesperson said: “Keeping everyone safe on our roads is our top priority.
“We will make a site visit to this junction and conduct a regulatory assessment.
“We will be checking the signs as well as the road markings to establish whether they need refreshing.”
