Village near Boroughbridge prepares for annual scarecrow takeover

Scarecrows will soon take over the streets in a village tradition near Boroughbridge.

Minskip will host its annual Scarecrow Competition on September 5 and 6, with entries lining the main street in a display of creativity.

Debbie Hargreaves, one of the main organisers, said: "As the main fundraiser for St John’s Church, the event has grown hugely since its inception six years ago.

"It’s absolutely wonderful how so many villagers have made scarecrows in the past, and I expect the same this year."

This year’s theme is 'The Circus,' and entries will be judged by Radio York’s Elly Fiorentini.

Winners will be announced in the church garden on Sunday afternoon.

Funds raised will support St John’s Church, and visitors are encouraged to make a suggested entry fee of £10.

Visitors can enjoy home-baked cakes and refreshments between 12pm and 4pm on both days.

Sunday will also feature ice cream, Pimms, a barbecue, and stalls including a tombola, plants, and pre-loved items.

Car parking will be available in the village field.

Robert Beaumont, a member of the Minskip Church Council, said: "It will raise much-needed money for our lovely little church and help to keep it as a vibrant part of our village community."
