A man has been charged with attempted kidnap after a person "tried to grab a child on a bike" in Hartlepool.

A man has been charged with attempted kidnap after a person “tried to grab a child on a bike” in Hartlepool.

Daniel Smith, 40, of Topcliffe Street in Hartlepool, is set to appear in the dock at Teesside Magistrates’ Court on Monday (August 17).

It follows an incident on Grosvenor Street just before 4pm on Friday (August 14) when a man reportedly approached a child, who was on a bike, and attempted to grab them.

They were detained by a member of the public and police later arrested a British man.

Detectives have now charged Smith with attempted kidnap.

He has been remanded in custody ahead of the court appearance.
