Northumberland is packed with dramatic castles, from beachside fortresses to island landmarks, and Tripadvisor reviewers have ranked six visitor favourites.

1. Bamburgh Castle

Towering above one of Northumberland's best-known beaches, Bamburgh Castle takes the top spot in Tripadvisor's list.
The fortress has dominated the coastline since Anglo-Saxon times and now offers visitors 14 rooms, the grand King's Hall, artworks and artefacts, as well as views over the Farne Islands.
Recent visitors have praised it as a "brilliant day out" for families, with one reviewer saying children enjoyed the activity booklet and Viking-themed experience. Others highlighted the coastal setting, describing the views from the castle as "breathtaking".
2. Alnwick Castle
Alnwick Castle is one of England's largest inhabited castles and is likely to be a familiar sight to Harry Potter fans.
As well as the State Rooms and the castle's long Percy family history, visitors can join film-location tours, try broomstick training and take part in activities including medieval crafts and Dragon Quest.
One recent family visitor said there was "something for everyone", praising the broomstick lesson, dressing-up opportunities and a hunt for hidden rats in the rooms.
3. Chillingham Castle
Known for its unusual collections, atmospheric rooms and ghostly reputation, Chillingham Castle offers a very different visitor experience.
The castle is open daily from Easter until the end of October, with its gardens and grounds also proving popular with visitors.
Tripadvisor reviewers have praised its "authentic" feel and extensive memorabilia, while one called it their favourite castle in Northumberland.
4. Warkworth Castle

Set above the River Coquet, Warkworth Castle is a well-preserved ruin with an imposing cross-shaped keep, plenty of rooms to explore and views across the village.
Visitors can also pair a trip to the castle with the nearby Hermitage, reached via a short walk and boat crossing.
Recent reviewers described it as a great place for children to explore, while another said its knight tournament made for an interactive family day out.
5. Dunstanburgh Castle
For those who prefer a walk with their history, Dunstanburgh Castle is hard to beat.
The dramatic ruins are reached on foot from Craster or Embleton, with sea views, wildlife and the Northumberland coast all part of the experience.
One visitor said the cliff-top walk was the highlight, while another praised the chance to explore rock pools and see seabirds along the way.
6. Lindisfarne Castle

The former coastal fort was transformed into a holiday home in the early 20th century and remains one of the most distinctive castles in the county.
