The summer holidays can be a tough time for parents, as they need to entertain their children during the six-week break.
The holidays are made even harder if you are looking for cheap activities to enjoy with the whole family.
With children aged between five and 15 being able to use local buses for free this August, families are able to enjoy cheap days out, including to Bamburgh Castle, which can be reached by taking the Arriva Northumbria X18.
If you need some inspiration for what to do, here is how to spend a free day at Bamburgh Castle.
What can I do for free in Bamburgh?
After stepping off the bus, Bamburgh Castle is only a 10-minute walk away, and you will be able to get some great photos of the outside of the famous attraction.
The castle’s website reads: "Bamburgh Castle has stood guard above the spectacular Northumberland coastline for over 1,400 years.
"Spanning nine acres of land on its rocky plateau, Bamburgh Castle is one of the largest inhabited castles in the country."
While it costs to get into Bamburgh Castle, there are still plenty of other things to do after taking in the impressive architecture.
The Northumberland coastline is known for its great walks, with loads of trails available to choose from.
The Northumberland Coast Path is 62 miles long and passes through Bamburgh.
You do not need to complete the whole route, but there are lots of good walks that you can complete, including the Bamburgh to Belford walk via Budle Point and Spindlestone Mill.
During a walk along the coastline, you might be able to spot some wildlife and get some great views of the sea and beyond.
If you are looking for a more relaxing day trip, you could head down past the castle to Bamburgh beach.
The sandy beach is ideal for building sandcastles and playing games, making it a good choice for families wanting to enjoy a cheap day out.
The water never gets very warm; however, in the summer, the sea is a little milder and perfect for paddling in.
For those who want to be a bit more adventurous, Bamburgh beach is good for surfing, with surf lessons available.
