Worsbrough Bridge murder: Man arrested following murder of a man in Barnsley

South Yorkshire Police received reports of a body inside a property on George Street, in Worsbrough Bridge, Barnsley.

On Friday, August 14, 2026, at 5.45pm, South Yorkshire Police received reports of a missing 62-year-old man from Sheffield. Police officers conducted missing-from-home enquiries following the report.

Later that day at 10.16pm, they received reports of a body inside a property in Worsbrough Bridge, Barnsley and police officers, alongside the ambulance service, attended, and located a man. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said: “His family are being supported by our Family Liaison Officers. They have asked for their privacy during this difficult time.

“A murder investigation was promptly launched by detectives in our Major Crime Unit, and a 60-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder a short time later. He remains in police custody at this time.

“Three scenes are currently in place while officers conduct their work. Two are currently in place on George Street, and one on the TransPennine trial near George Street.”

Detective chief inspector Aneela Khalil-Khan, who is currently leading the investigation, said: “This news will be shocking to the local communities, and not something they expect to be waking up to on a Saturday morning.

“Our officers have moved fast, and have made an arrest. They are now working hard to determine the circumstances around this tragic incident.

“Our officers will be around the Worsbrough area of Barnsley throughout the day and into the evening, conducting several lines of enquiries.

“This is distressing news, so please stop and talk to them if you have some concerns - they will listen and help where they can.”
