There’s a major police operation underway in the heart of York tonight (Saturday).
Dozens of police officers are at a scene on Tower Street, next to Clifford’s Tower.
A large area is taped off, centred around the traffic-light controlled pedestrian crossing.
Police won’t give any details about the incident, but did say the cordon will be in place for some time.
An Uber is stopped close to the scene with its hazard lights flashing.
Reports online say a child pedestrian was hit by a vehicle, but this is unconfirmed.
Traffic is being stopped from entering the road from both ends.
There’s a police cordon close to the turning to the Hilton Hotel and Castle Car Park.

Through traffic is being forced into a U-turn here, and return along Clifford Street.
Vehicles coming over Skeldergate Bridge can’t go left, but must continue along Tower Street towards Fishergate and Piccadilly.
Pedestrians can still get through.
