A 2017 Benjamin Bunny 50p coin said to feature a rare alignment error has been listed for sale online for £27,000.

The circulated coin is part of the popular Beatrix Potter 50p collection, released by The Royal Mint, and its seller claims the Queen’s portrait and reverse-side Benjamin Bunny design are misaligned.

The listing describes the alleged fault as a “rotation misstrike” or alignment error — a type of production issue which can draw interest from collectors when it is genuine and clearly authenticated.

However, collectors are being urged to take care over eye-catching online valuations. While error coins, limited editions and coins in exceptional condition can sell for more than face value, an advertised price does not necessarily reflect what a coin is worth on the market.

The seller says the Benjamin Bunny coin is genuine and in circulated condition, with prospective buyers advised to check photographs closely before making a purchase.

Beatrix Potter 50ps have become a popular collecting series since they were introduced in 2016, featuring characters including Peter Rabbit, Mrs Tiggy-Winkle, Jemima Puddle-Duck and Benjamin Bunny.

Some of the most valuable Potter-themed coins are gold proof editions rather than the standard coins found in change.

Dealers have previously valued examples including the 2020 Peter Rabbit Gold Proof 50p and the 2016 150th anniversary Beatrix Potter Gold Proof 50p at around £1,800 to £2,200, depending on condition and demand.

Standard brilliant uncirculated and silver proof versions generally command far lower prices, while the value of ordinary circulation coins can vary significantly.

The Royal Mint has previously warned that high asking prices on auction websites should not be treated as proof of a coin’s value, as they can represent a seller’s expectations rather than a confirmed sale.

Anyone considering buying or selling an unusual coin is advised to compare completed sales of similar authenticated examples and seek a professional appraisal where necessary.
