Revamped East Yorkshire pub roars with a bold new look that gets people talking

A popular pub has reopened in an East Yorkshire town after a six-figure makeover, which has given it a distinctive new look.

The Black Lion on Selby Road, Snaith, closed on July 27 and re-opened yesterday (Thur), with a new dark paint job, which has attracted many comments both for and against.

The pub responded on Facebook: “Yes, we’ve heard all of your comments and in all honesty, we’re laughing along with you. It’s bright, it’s bold and if there’s one good thing about it, you can’t bloody miss us!! At the end of the day it is just a colour and to many of your surprise, yes! It was approved by the council.”

The Black Lion is owned by Star Pubs and is described by CAMRA as a ‘cosy welcoming local’ and a ‘wet-led’ pub with no food.

Star Pubs area manager Jason Suddaby said: “We’re delighted to have invested in a £100,000 internal and external refurbishment of The Black Lion at Snaith to help it thrive for the long term and broaden its appeal.

“The exterior of the pub has been completely renovated and repainted. The inside has been upgraded throughout with a smart new decor that is sympathetic to the building whilst making the pub more warm, welcoming and contemporary."

Other changes include a brand-new darts zone kitted out with two halo-lit darts boards with electronic scoring and the introduction of Sky and TNT Sports, which will be shown on new screens.

On the drinks front, the cellar has been overhauled and state-of- the-art dispense equipment installed to ensure consistently perfect pints. Customers can also look forward to a wider selection of drinks spanning cocktails, premium lagers and sprits plus a new wine menu.

Accompanying the revamp is a new programme of activities, such as a regular quiz and more live entertainment.

A second phase of work starts in September to makeover the pub’s sun-trap courtyard garden with new furniture, parasols and planting.

The pub’s operator, Andrew Jackson, said: “The Black Lion is looking fantastic after all the TLC it has had. We’ve had lots of compliments about the improvements from those who’ve popped in to see what’s going on. It’s exciting to be opening the doors again and showing everyone their new-look local.

“I’m excited to be opening my second venue with Star Pubs, carrying on from my success at the Bowmans Hotel in Howden.”

Chloe Louise, manager of the Black Lion, said just prior to Thursday’s re-opening: “I can’t wait to reopen and welcome old customers and new back to the Black Lion. I’m excited for the future of the pub and hope everyone loves it as much as we do.”
