'We tried walking to York's NRM but gave up halfway in the heat'

Visitor gave up walk to National Railway Museum in heat

I PICKED up the news item on my mobile phone about York's National Railway Museum, having recently visited the city.

Thinking of the environment, we travelled over from Cheshire by train to York for our short break in the city, instead of using our car.

With the NRM on our York to-do list, we decided to walk there from York Railway Station.

Our trek began by circling the adjacent hotel, and then on through the Leeman Road tunnel. We gave up on the NRM probably around half way to the main entrance, the extreme heat getting to us, and with nowhere really to sit en-route, and also the thought of the long trek back.

It was only on that way back we found the short cut into York Station.

So why is this short cut not more clearly signposted?

The road train wasn’t running on our NRM day. It probably was no use to us anyway, as I understand it doesn’t stop at York Railway Station. Why?

In my view, the road train is surely more suited to a seafront jolly with an ice cream along the prom than a means of travel to an important museum like the NRM.

Why not run a regular vintage bus service from the station to the museum front door?

And why the long walk? Surely a temporary entrance nearer the Leeman Road tunnel could have been designed into the scheme?

There is enough walking in the NRM itself looking at the exhibits without adding the long walk there and back.

Or is visiting the NRM seen as a pilgrimage?

It certainly meets the true definition of the word!
