Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council has postponed garden waste collections scheduled for today (August 14) because of extreme temperatures.
The council said the decision had been taken to protect staff working in the heat and to make sure household waste, food waste and recycling collections can continue as normal.
Residents who were due to have their garden waste collected on Friday will not lose out on a collection. Instead, the missed service will be added to the end of the current garden waste subscription period.
The authority said cancelling the garden waste round would free up extra capacity within its waste teams at a time when crews are working in particularly challenging conditions.
A council statement said: “The decision to cancel tomorrow’s garden waste collection will create additional capacity within our teams to ensure that all other household waste, food waste and recycling commodities can continue to be collected, while also helping us to protect our staff working in the extreme heat.”
The council added that demand for garden waste collections had fallen in recent weeks, which it believes is linked to the prolonged hot weather.

Garden waste services typically involve the collection of grass cuttings, hedge trimmings and other garden material from subscribed households.
The council has apologised to residents affected by the postponement and thanked them for their patience and understanding.
Other scheduled household waste, recycling and food waste collections are expected to go ahead as normal on Friday.
