York Castle Museum is serving up Victorian picnic recipes for visitors to try.
The museum is offering a slice of history with traditional recipes from the 19th century.
The dishes, which include Balmoral tarts, sponge cake, tea cream, and apple cheesecake, will be available throughout the remainder of August and early September.
These dishes were popular picnic staples during the Victorian era.
The museum's summer programme highlights the picnic recipes of Mrs Beeton, a notable 'celebrity chef' of the 1860s.
Known for her comprehensive cookbooks, Mrs Beeton's picnic recipes were designed for large groups, with instructions catering for gatherings of 20 and 40 people.
York Castle Museum will be giving visitors the chance to sample some of Mrs Beeton’s picnic staples.
Demonstrations and samples will be available on Wednesdays and Saturdays until September 5.
Although the museum will only be trying four of the more ‘normal’ recipes, visitors can see a cucumber-shaped ice cream mould on display in the Period Rooms.
Visitors can also explore more recent food history in the recreated kitchens of the 1940s and 1980s.
York Castle Museum encourages visitors to bring their own picnic to enjoy in the museum’s Mill Grounds.
