Yorkshire Water has launched a £2.5 million storm overflow project in York.
The scheme at Poppleton Road North combined sewer overflow, part of a wider £1.5 billion programme of investment by April 2030, aims to reduce discharges into nearby waterways.
An underground tank capable of storing 250,000 litres of stormwater will be installed to prevent discharges during periods of heavy rainfall.
Sam Pashley, project manager at Yorkshire Water, said: "Our storm overflows are operating more than we, and our customers, would like, and we’re committed to reducing the number of discharges taking place.
"We’re on track with our York programme – making great progress at Landing Lane, and getting started on Poppleton Road."
The tank will be installed within the grounds of Howe Hill Allotments but will not affect allotment plots, as work will be limited to gravel and grassed areas.
Once completed, the project is expected to cut discharges into the River Ouse by 86 per cent, limiting them to fewer than 10 per year.
The scheme follows the start of a similar project at York’s Landing Lane CSO, which aims to reduce discharges by 49 per cent.
Yorkshire Water plans several further storm overflow projects in the area.
