Man arrested after being rescued from York river

A MAN has been arrested after being rescued from a river in York.

Police were seen rushing to the aid of a man in the River Foss, near Piccadilly, at around 10.30am this morning (August 13).

An eyewitness, who asked not to be named, said they had seen the man, 40, waist-deep and up against a wall in the river.

Officers stood along the bridge to keep an eye on his activity before he was rescued by ambulance crews, North Yorkshire Police said.

A spokesperson added: “At around 10am this morning, we were called to the River Foss in York following reports of a 40-year-old man in the water.

“The man was rescued and checked over by ambulance crews but sustained no injuries.

“Following further enquiries, the man was arrested on suspicion of theft from a shop and taken into custody.”
