Winner says how success in 2025 York Press Business Awards boosted her business

One of the winners of last year’s York & North Yorkshire BUSINESSiQ Awards is calling on people to enter, saying their success gave them such a boost.
Kathy Vint, who founded the Sewcialising fabric shop and sewing studios in 2020 was delighted to win the Small Business category.
Kathy said: “We’re passionate about making sewing feel accessible, sociable and inspiring. As well as our fabric shop, we run sewing classes and workshops and have built a lovely community around what we do.
“I think the award recognised not only how much the business has grown, but also the community we’ve created and the hard work that goes on behind the scenes of a small independent business.”

Looking back to the glitzy award ceremony at the Knavesmire, Kathy continued: “Winning was amazing! I was genuinely so touched and shocked when our name was announced, as I really didn’t expect us to win. I was quite emotional on the night!

“When you run a small business, you put so much time, energy and heart into it, so receiving that recognition really did make all the hard work feel worthwhile. It was such a special moment and one I’ll always remember.”
Kathy says it is ‘fabulous’ to say Sewcialising is an award-winning business.
She explained: “Winning gave us some fantastic press coverage and helped raise awareness of Sewcialising, but it also gave us an extra sense of credibility and pride in what we’ve built.
“We loved being able to share the news with our customers and shout about it on social media. We’ve proudly displayed the award by our till ever since, so all our new and existing customers can see it!”
Kathy says she would ‘absolutely’ encourage business to enter the 2026 awards.

She explained: “When you’re running a business, you’re so busy focusing on the day-to-day that you don’t always stop to reflect on how far you’ve come or celebrate what you’ve achieved. Entering an award gives you a reason to do exactly that.
“Running a business can be incredibly tough, particularly at the moment, so I think it’s really important to recognise and celebrate the wins along the way, big or small.
Kathy added: “And even if you don’t win, being shortlisted gives you a brilliant opportunity to tell people about your business, celebrate what you do and meet other local businesses. The awards evening itself is also a fantastic event to be part of.
“Sometimes, as small business owners, we’re the last people to shout about our own achievements, but we absolutely should! You never know, you might end up taking an award home with you too!”
