The company creating a hotel in the heart of York has revealed more about its plans.
As YorkMix reported in March, 48 Coney Street, formerly TK Maxx, was bought by Criterion Capital, with plans to turn it into a Zedwell Hotel.
Now Zedwell has shared more details about its plans for the 1907 building, with its striking Grade II-listed mock-Tudor façade.
The company had already said it will offer “automated hospitality“.
Now it has revealed that Zedwell York will be one of the first hotels with capsule rooms in the UK, outside of London.
Capsule hotels were invented in Japan. They feature many small, bed-sized rooms known as capsules.
The hotel says: “Zedwell Capsule Rooms offer a smart, modern way to stay in the heart of York, combining affordability with privacy and comfort.
“Each individual capsule is designed with a premium Hypnos mattress, soft Egyptian cotton bedding, filtered air, gentle lighting, and a secure privacy shutter to create a calm, restful environment.”
There will also be some “cocoon rooms”, “featuring a minimalist, windowless design, sound-insulated walls, ambient lighting and premium beds”.
Rooms will be created in the basement, ground and first floors.
Zedwell aims to create a main entrance on Market Street, saying: “Our vision is to create a much better active frontage at the entrance than is currently in place.”
There will be management and security on site around the clock but no dining facilities.
The hotel operator says: “The zedwell & More programme actively encourages guests to spend time in local restaurant, cafes, and other cultural venues through partnership agreements which provide for guest needs deliberately not accommodated on site.
“This will help other businesses in the city centre and across York.”
The company adds: “The building already has planning permission to convert the upper floors into a hotel, and Criterion Capital is now seeking to slightly amend the layout and façade.”
